A new dawn

Following a management buyout Defected Records MD turned CEO wanted to establish a fresh identity and unite the Leadership Team. We initiated an eight-month Leadership Programme, designed to address the challenges and opportunities associated with the change in ownership and develop the skills for leaders to work through the challenges and opportunities of the change in ownership. The Leadership Programme paved the way for a new era at Defected 2.0. The vision for Defected to become the greatest house label of all time was agreed and crystalised throughout the organisation. 

The Defected Leadership Team were not only passionate about music, but they also love sport. The concept that ‘a team is defined by their commitment to the badge on the front of their shirt and not the name on the back’ transformed the Leadership Team’s identity pillars into an acronym of Defected.  The Defected 2.0 Leadership Badge marked a pivotal point in serving as a guiding force for attitudes, behaviours, decisions, and processes. One notable example is the ‘F’ pillar, ‘fail fast fix faster’ which became ingrained in the Defected culture, resulting in a significant boost in innovation. The transformation not only empowered leaders to bring forward their ideas but also inspired their teams to feel empowered to contribute and innovate. 

Ongoing coaching with the CEO played a crucial role in keeping the project on course. As leaders completed the Leadership Programme they emerged with a forward thinking mindset equipped with tools for effective team management.  Internal communication had significantly improved, and they celebrated a newfound sense of organisation in the business. Defected 2.0 continues to thrive in fulfilling their vison characterised by team expansion, dance hits and fresh opportunities in the US market. ‘Follow the Badge’ became the guiding mantra of leadership at Defected. 

The Coaching and Team Sessions with Tamson has supported my transition from MD to CEO and developed the team’s leadership qualities and skills.
